Today is a national holiday in Japan, National Foundation Day (Kenkoku Kinen no Hi).

This is the day the first Emperor Jimmu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emperor_Jimmu), descendant of the sun goddess Amaterasu, ascended to the throne.
