I saw those tall black birds along the river again today, and this time got a better picture of them. They have been identified as cormorants.

Where I live a species called the Double Crested Cormorant is common, but I think the birds in your picture are a different species.
I’ve heard that in some Asian cultures cormorants are (or were) used for fishing. A ring is placed around the bird’s neck, so it can’t swallow an entire fish, and then the fisherman sends it out into the water. It returns with a fish, and is rewarded with a small piece of fish that will fit through the constricted throat.

I think you should go drink sake and watch the cormorant fishing! I would love to see that…
I think the season is over now. Maybe next year?
