It’s true: Never, ever pour oil down the drain (or into your body)
From the New York Times “Wirecutter” today. I would add to this, imagine what they do to your body. Even extra virgin olive oil can impair our arterial function.
“Something to keep in mind as you finish out this year’s holiday parties and cooking-paloozas: Letting oil trickle down your drain can wreak serious havoc on your plumbing system. Residual oil can build up over time and eventually clog your pipes—especially during winter, when cooler temperatures expedite coagulation.
But pipes aren’t the only things that take a hit. Pouring oil down the drain isn’t great for the environment, either. Says Wirecutter’s editor of sustainability coverage, Katie Okamoto: “From a wastewater and water-quality standpoint, we know that oils and fats aren’t good for aquatic ecosystems. Capturing and reusing them to the extent that you can, and reducing the amount that you use to begin with, is better for the environment.”
Hi Doug! My name is Shannon, I’m 28, I live in Georgia, USA and I’ve loved being lucky enough to see snapshots about your beautiful and interesting life! My girlfriend and I were just visiting Japan for 23 days in December. I fell in love with the country and I hope to come back soon. Funny enough, I was just googling the roasted sweet potato I had on my trip and wanted to recreate at home, when I came across your Reddit question about its caloric makeup. Your post led me to your blog here.
I found we had so much in common – I also love learning about and eating a plant based diet, have a love for Japan, a partner I share my life with, and I also know the pain of losing a beloved dog, I lost my first dog recently. This connection via the internet felt like fate.
I wanted to reach out and connect to just say that I am so happy to see pieces of your life and get to know what you think, enjoy, and find worth sharing. I admire your journey to health, your ability to form connections, your love for animals, your tech passion, and your adventurous spirit that enabled you to live in Japan! Thank you for sharing. I wish you, Pao, Hirokazu, and Tao all the greatest happiness and health! 🙂
Thanks for the kind message, Shannon! It does sound like we have a lot in common!
