Phone and Text VoIP (Voice over IP) apps — 2 Comments

  1. You might want to check out WhatsApp, too. I have relatives in the US and friends in Europe who use it, and it works pretty well. It’s just not very popular in Japan; for people here, I generally use LINE, though our son and daughter-in-law in the US use it as well.

  2. I use WhatsApp also, for people I work with outside Japan. But conceptually it’s different. It’s like LINE in that it only works with other WhatsApp users.

These VoIP apps actually give you a U.S. telephone number. The people you are communicating with don’t need anything special. You can call or text between just as if you had a cell phone with that number. And you can make calls with U.S. banks and so on as well.
