The ridiculous MLK brouhaha
From the NY Times:
Among those coming to Mrs. Clinton’s defense on Sunday was Robert L. Johnson, the founder of Black Entertainment Television, who appeared at a rally with her in Columbia, S.C. He said Mrs. Clinton did not mean to take any credit away from Dr. King, who, he said, had led a “moral crusade†that ultimately had to be “written in to law.â€
“That is the way the legislative process works in this nation and that takes political leadership,†he said. “That’s all Hillary was saying.â€
Mr. Johnson then veered into a new line of attack on Mr. Obama, in which he appeared at first to raise the specter of the candidate’s drug use as a young man, a matter that Mr. Obama has written and spoken about candidly.
“To me, as an African-American, I am frankly insulted that the Obama campaign would imply that we are so stupid that we would think Hillary and Bill Clinton, who have been deeply and emotionally involved in black issues since Barack Obama was doing something in the neighborhood — and I won’t say what he was doing, but he said it in the book — when they have been involved.â€
I don’t think there’s much question what he REALLY meant, although he’s tried a redaction, now saying that he was referring to his “work in the community” during his younger days….He was referring to drug use. Just freaking say it. random bob, a.r.c.
He was, of course, referring to drug use. I don’t know why that topic is off-limits. Obama wrote about it himself. Why can’t anybody mention it?It was a distraction from this discussion though.doug
I think the thing that irritates me the most about the Obama campaign is that they seem to think they are the only ones eligible to play the “race” card, when in fact Senator Obama is 1/2 white and 1/2 KENYAN, not African American at all. His father was a KENYAN National here for his education. He was raised by his white mother and white grandparents and went to a PRIVATE school. What can he possibly know about the trials of AFRICAN AMERICANS in the inner city that is more than Senator Clinton would know? Frankly he knows what he has been TOLD, not what he has experienced, so he should stop playing the “race” card and implying that he has “shared” the experience of the poor working inner city african american it just isn’t TRUE.
